Water Service Line Inventory
Lead and Copper Rule Revisions Compliance
In 2022, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Environmental Protection Division (EPD) released updated standards called the Lead and Copper Rule Revisions (LCRR). The updated rule is designed to protect communities from the risks of lead exposure from drinking water flowing through lead-based pipes.
The Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Lead and Copper Rule Revisions (LCRR) require public water systems to complete an inventory of all service connections in their distribution system. The primary goal of the Lead and Copper Rule is to ensure that drinking water in communities across the United States remains safe and free from contaminants. The rule stipulates that water utilities must work to eliminate any existing lead water lines in their distribution systems. The BGJWSC will work diligently to meet the new requirements and guidelines in the LCRR.
To ensure the high quality and safety of the BGJWSC’s drinking water, staff will complete a water service line study and inventory in the coming months. Customers served by a service line that is lead, galvanized or of unknown type will be notified within 30 days of inventory completion. You may see BGJWSC staff surveying the water service lines from the water meter to the building inlet by:
- Physical visual inspection (no impact to customers)
- Pipe diameter
- Using known service lines of an area to determine the status of adjacent service lines based on similar criteria
- Using water system records
Water service line inventories will be updated regularly and submitted to the EPD each year.

- Perform an at-home materials verification test using these instructions.
- Contact a licensed plumber to help you make the determination.
- Purchase a lead test kit at a hardware or home improvement store (look for an EPA recognized kit).
