Sanitary Sewer Overflow on Parkwood Drive in Brunswick – July 19, 2018
The Brunswick Glynn Joint Water & Sewer Commission NPDES Permit GA0025313, in accordance with the conditions of this permit and DNR Regulation 391-3-6-05 Emergency Actions, hereby make Public Notification of a wastewater spill that was reported 7/19/2018 at 4:30 PM due to debris obstructing the normal flow.
Date of Spill: 7/19/2018
Time Reported: 4:30 p.m.
Location of Spill: A sanitary sewer manhole (SMH-4WTP0470) at the intersection of Parkwood Drive and N. Cleburn Street.
Cause of Spill: Debris in gravity main obstructing flow from Sewer Pump Station 4017 force main discharge to sewer gravity main.
Estimated volume of discharge: 400 gallons
State Waters Discharged: Terry Creek
Corrective Action Taken: Staff observed the event and shut down the station within minutes of the event. Due to heavy rains the untreated sewer which escaped from the manhole mixed with water within the flooded roadway and went down the storm drains. It was not possible to recover the spill. Level within the gravity lines and lift station was carefully maintained below overflow level while the line was cleared of debris. The JWSC laboratory will continue to test this area.
Regulatory Compliance: Signs were not placed along the immediately affected areas to indicate the presence of a sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) due to the ongoing rain event. The Environmental Protection Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources was notified, along with local authorities and the Glynn County Health Department Coastal District Environmental Health Manager.
